Creation of shared health record (SHR) using NID

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in Bangladesh is developing a shared health Record (SHR) system as part of its broader health information exchange (HIE) initiative. The system assigns a unique health ID to each citizen, built on top of the existing national ID (NID) or birth registration number (BRN). Health ID serves as a universal patient identifier that enables authorized healthcare providers to access and share a patient’s clinical history across different facilities. Citizens register using their NID or BRN, with their NID credentials verified through demographic verification APIs provided by the Bangladesh Election Commission.
