Education certificate verification system using national digital ID
Papua New Guinea relies on paper-based student registration and manual data entry, which creates errors such as misspelled names and inconsistent records. Schools also struggle to confirm student identity, and certificates can easily be edited and reproduced by anyone. Verification depends on manual checks, which are time-consuming and difficult to detect fraud.
This use case proposes a comprehensive national student identity system that will use SevisPass Digital ID, linked to the SevisDEx data exchange platform. Schools register students through a parent-assisted online registration portal or a dedicated school-based registration station to ensure each student has a verified identity before school certificate exams.
The National Department of Education will issue passing certificates with a QR code linked to a digitally signed record using its public key infrastructure (PKI). Any registered organization can scan the QR code and verify student details using PKI certificates. Through this verification process, the verifying organization confirms the authenticity of the student’s name, school, year, and examination result.
