Driver verification and real-time bus tracking using national digital ID

Papua New Guinea faces safety and accountability issues in the public motor vehicle (PMV) sector. Many buses run without proper permits or in unsafe conditions. This puts passengers and others at risk. Owners also struggle with theft, misuse, and poor service due to limited monitoring.

The digital PMV system use case proposes SevisPass digital ID to verify driver identities and link them to the public vehicle that they are assigned to operate. Each vehicle will have an ownership and maintenance record stored in a digital profile, linked to the owner's SevisPass ID. The driver will confirm their identity through multifactor authentication before they operate a vehicle.

The system tracks buses in real time through GPS, allowing owners to monitor their locations and driving behaviour. The system allows passengers to verify the driver by scanning the QR code on the vehicle’s exterior, which links to a real-time status page for the authenticated driver. Passengers can also send SMS alerts to report safety concerns. This system improves transparency and safety across the sector.
