Issuance of a driving license using the National Digital ID

Many African countries still use manual, paper-based driver licensing systems that are vulnerable to fraud and data errors. Traffic officers cannot detect suspended driving licenses or fake permits because they lack reliable roadside verification tools.

The proposed use case will enable transport authorities to use a national digital ID authentication service to issue a driving license and provide roadside verification. When a citizen applies for a driving license, the system uses the national digital ID e-KYC service to verify their identity. On successful verification, the driving licenses will be issued, which will be linked to the respective citizens’ national digital ID.

The digital license will be a cryptographically signed credential. Citizens can store it in a digital license app or carry it as a QR code card. Traffic police can scan the code with a dedicated app to verify these licenses instantly, even without an internet connection.
