Digital platform-led integration and inclusion in agriculture services through digital identity

In many East African countries, farmers lack a single digital platform for farming advice, loans, insurance, and markets. Consequently, they lack accurate information on farm inputs. They also struggle to get credit and sell their produce. This use case proposes a digital farmer registry linked to the national digital ID.

Trained agents enroll farmers using national digital ID credentials and biometric authentication during in-person visits. The registry links each national digital ID to its respective farmer profile. This profile comprises verified demographic data, land ownership records, crop types, farm size, and farming practices. It also links financial information, such as bank account details, income history, and credit indicators. These details create a complete agroeconomic profile.

Farmers can share their profiles securely with approved public and private entities via OTP-based consent. For instance, banking institutions use this profile to assess farmer creditworthiness, and governments use it to distribute subsidies directly. The registry can be further developed to ease supply chain issues faced by farmers.
