Highway Toll Payment - FASTag (KYC)
Digital ID is used for electronic know your customer (e-KYC) verification during FASTag registration. It enabled instant issuance of electronic toll collection tags. FASTag was launched in 2016 by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the UIDAI, and authorized banks. It is a radio frequency identification (RFID) device affixed to vehicle windshields that enables automatic deduction of toll charges without the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas. Vehicle owners must complete KYC verification to obtain a FASTag. Aadhaar-based e-KYC has become the preferred method due to its speed and convenience. Customers can register for a FASTag through multiple channels, which include bank branches, point-of-sale locations at toll plazas, online banking portals, and mobile apps. Customers have to provide their Aadhaar number for instant identity verification against the UIDAI database. The Aadhaar e-KYC process retrieves the applicant’s verified name, address, and photograph, which eliminates the need for physical document submission and enables instant FASTag activation. The system also requires vehicle registration details to link the FASTag to the specific vehicle. FASTag became mandatory for all class M & N vehicles in India from February 2021, driving rapid adoption. As of April 2025, more than 108.5 million FASTags have been issued. Aadhaar played a key role to enable seamless e-KYC during registration.
