Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) - Creation of health ID using Aadhaar

Digital ID is voluntarily used to create a unique health identifier. The Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), formerly known as Health ID, was launched in 2021 by the National Health Authority (NHA). This initiative was part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

ABHA is a 14-digit unique health identification number that serves as a digital gateway to an individual’s longitudinal health records. It enables seamless sharing of health information across hospitals, diagnostic centers, pharmacies, insurance companies, and telemedicine platforms.

Citizens can voluntarily create their ABHA with Aadhaar-based authentication, through OTP or biometric. The ABHA system links to personal health records (PHRs) stored in digital lockers accessible through the ABHA mobile app or participating healthcare applications. This enables patients to share their medical history, prescriptions, diagnostic reports, discharge summaries, and immunization records with healthcare providers on a consent basis. As of December 2024, a total of 711.6 million Ayushman Bharat health accounts have been created.
