Digital platform for seed traceability and certification using national digital ID

African countries face major crop losses due to counterfeit and low-quality seeds. Weak certification systems and poor producer records prevent farmers from verifying seed quality and origin. Farmers often buy uncertified seeds, which reduce crop yield, increase disease risk, and lower farm income.

The use case proposes a digital seed traceability and certification platform that connects to the national digital ID system. The proposed platform creates a digital seed passport for every certified seed batch and links it to the verified digital identity of producers, distributors, cooperatives, and retailers. Regulators register each certified batch with a unique digital identifier that stores seed variety, origin, treatment history, and certification details. Every transaction across the supply chain uses digital authentication and creates a traceable record.

Farmers verify seed authenticity through a quick response (QR) code or near-field communication (NFC) tag before purchase. The platform helps regulators detect counterfeit seeds, improve accountability, and strengthen food security.
