Social security schemes registration

Digital ID verifies and authenticates individuals who register for social security programs and seek to access benefits. Tanzania operates multiple contributory social security programs under the Social Security Regulatory Authority (SSRA), which uses the national identification number (NIN) to verify members against the National Identification Authority (NIDA) database.

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) provides social security coverage to private-sector workers, NGOs, religious organizations, international organizations, and self-employed persons, with employers and employees each contributing 10% of their monthly salaries. As of June 2023, NSSF had approximately 1,189,222 registered members.

The Public Service Social Security Fund (PSSSF), operational since 2018, serves public service employees across mainland Tanzania with contributions from both employers and employees.

The National Informal Sector Social Security Program (NISS), launched in 2021, extends social insurance coverage to informal-sector workers with flexible payment methods that require a minimum monthly contribution of 30,000 TZS (approximately USD 11.4). NISS beneficiaries use their NIN to log in to online platforms and mobile apps to view contributions, update personal information, submit claims, and access services.

NIN verification ensures accurate member identification, prevents duplicate registrations, streamlines contributions tracking, facilitates benefits disbursement, and enables members to access their social security accounts across different programs throughout their working lives.
