Passport application
Digital ID facilitates identity verification during passport issuance. The Tanzania Immigration Department verifies applicants' identities by matching their national identification numbers (NINs) against the National Identification Authority (NIDA) database during passport applications. Since January 2018, Tanzania has issued biometric East African e-passports that comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) international standards. During a passport application, whether online through the immigration portal or in person at a regional immigration office, applicants must provide their NIN for identity verification. The process includes complete biometric capture, with fingerprints and facial images recorded in the immigration database during in-person appointments at regional offices, Immigration Headquarters, or Tanzanian embassies abroad.
