APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) - Creation of student ID
Digital ID is used to create a lifelong unique student identifier linked to Aadhaar that tracks academic progress from primary to higher education. The Ministry of Education introduced the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR), also known as the “One Nation One Student ID,” as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This creates a unified digital education ecosystem. Each student receives a unique 12-digit APAAR ID, also called an Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) ID when used in higher education, linked to their Aadhaar number. This ID serves as a permanent academic identifier throughout their educational journey from kindergarten through post-graduation and beyond. The APAAR ID serves multiple functions. It acts as a gateway to DigiLocker, an online repository where students can securely store and access essential documents, such as mark sheets, certificates, and degrees. It also links to the ABC, which maintains a digital ledger of all academic credits earned by students across institutions and enables credit transfer and recognition of prior learning. The APAAR ID also facilitates seamless student mobility across educational institutions within India. As of early 2025, more than 20 million students have been registered for the APAAR ID system nationwide, with pilot implementations underway across various states.
